Japanese holly bushes,  called Mahonia barberries or “hiragi nanten“. “Hiragi” means holly in Japanese.

Mahonia barberries are widely as hedges in homes and in urban parks. The blue berries actually emerge at the end of May and the bushes go on fruiting through June.
