These are called pond skaters because they skate on the surface of the pond like human skaters — duh. The scientific name for the bug is gerris lacustris.

Interesting fact no. 1: They are buoyed up on the surface of the pond by their light bodies. The bugs’ legs make dimples on the surface of the water but do not break it.

Interesting fact: no 2: These bugs sense a drowning insect nearby they skate over in gangs to feed on it.
