This is called the Japanese Photinia or Kaname-mochi plant. It is most often seen as a hedge. Clipping by gardeners produces new growth of red leaves and the reddish leaves are seen in autumn and again in spring. Pointers for identification: The leaves of the Japanese species are smooth but the Chinese species are toothed.
