We visited the famous Sengokuhara Plateau or Plain (along with hoards of tourists). The plain is populated by golden miscanthus grasses (susuki).

The tourist board says the grasses are best viewed until October 15 at the Plain but they are still beautiful in November right now.

The grassland habitat is rare in Japan.  Because of the high rainfall, most grasslands revert to secondary forests quickly, so any grassland habitat has to be maintained by labour-intensive methods, including burning.
