Pieris comes from the mythological name Pierides, an alternative name of the mythological Muses, the goddesses of the arts. japonica translates as “from Japan” It is called アセビ or asebi in Japanese.
The plant also has other common names: Japanese Andromeda or Lily-of-valley Bush.
Japanese Pieris is the first broadleaf evergreen shrub to flower, in late Winter to early Spring. The pieris flowers can last up to 5 weeks. It is a plant belonging to the ericaceae or heath family and that likes moist acid soil and partial shade. The leaves and nectar are poisonous.
