The water lily belongs to Nymphaeaceae or Water lily family with 8 genera native to the temperate and tropical parts of the world. Alternatively, it is called the water nymph – the nymph in mythology being a spirit of rivers and springs that appear to young women. It is a perennial that has been cultivated in the west and bred from the 19 th century in France. “Nymphae alba” which is native to Europe is the parent of many garden species.
There are two types large and small. Water lilies may bloom from May to October.
