Nadeshiko in Japanese. The feathery kinds of nadeshiko are native to the mountains in Japan and they were bred centuries ago into the familiar Dianthuses and carnations that we know today. But the feathery nadeshikos are getting so rare these days, we can only find the common hybrid garden types.

Scarlet red varieties of dianthus have become popular cultivars at nurseries of late. They look kind of unnatural to me like they’ve been painted over.
